Happenstance is a strange thing. I was researching for the second book in The Aunt Enid Mysteries – set in 1920 – for a throw-away comment about the ‘Great Picnic’ – an affectionate name for the quarantine tent city at the Jubilee Oval, Adelaide, South Australia – from 1919. After reading accounts of mental health issues related to the epidemic and its aftereffects, I was moved to write ‘Spanish Flu’. The lyrics were originally written in February, 2020.
